“Traditional method to make Ostara eggs”
By Autumn Storm
Traditionally Ostara eggs were made with hard-boiled snake eggs but Hen eggs will do.
I learned how to make scarlet eggs throw trial and error working as close to the Traditional way our Witch ancestors made their eggs.
Ostara eggs more commonly know, as scarlet eggs are not only symbols of the rebirth of the sun God but all so a tasty food at Ostara pot luck and as with every thing with Witchcraft scarlet eggs ends up in christen holydays as the ester egg.
The main ingredient is the scuffed off skins of the common yellow onions the skins are orange amber in color if you start collecting onion shins now you may have enough to dye your eggs next Ostara.
Storing the shins is easy peasy just take the scuffed off skins as you use the onions in your cooking and throw them in a brown paper shopping bag. I collect onions skins all year long for dying eggs and wool.
You need the following materials:
One kitchen timer
One large cook pot
Two-teaspoon salt
Three-tablespoons white vinegar
One dozen brown eggs (the white egg will not work!)
4 or 5 hand full of the onions skins
Boil the onions skins and salt for 30 to 45 min in water strain the skins with a spider (wirer brass strainer) if you have one and add the white vinegar and brown eggs, boil the eggs for 3 min then take of the heat allow the eggs to stay in the dye for one hour then rinse the eggs in cool water and lay out on a towel to dry and you have the most pretties scarlet eggs.
Note #1: The eggs much be covered in the dye so try to make more dye then you need and if you are a spinner then after the eggs are done use the cooled dye for wool. Dyes wool golden amber.
Note #2: Do not cut up a bag of fresh onions and try this you will end up with nasty onion flavored eggs! Take the time to collect the skins there is no short cuts in the Craft.
